Vancouver International Airport - YVR

I can't believe it is finally time to leave!  Now that I am at the airport it seems so surreal.  Even though I've been to this airport countless times, it seems so new to me and it is enhancing the excitement.  Soon I will be boarding my first flight to San Francisco and my backpacking adventure will begin.  There were times during the day leading to this point where I thought the whole adventure might have to be postponed since there were still last minute things to be done.  However, thankfully it was all done just in the nick of…

Tomorrow the Adventure Begins!

The movers came today.  After countless hours of stressing and panicking over whether or not I can finish packing, if the storage unit I rented will fit, everything worked out.  As it always does.  But I do have to give all the credit to my movers, they are hard working and very wonderful people.  Without them, I would have been lost and there would be no way that my house would be empty now. I…

Soon I will be carrying all my worldly possessions on my back moving from one city to the next and the excitement (and stress) is building!  Two short days and I will be flying away from Vancouver to my first destination!  During the past few days I've spent many sleepless nights figuring out my itinerary while in Europe and I have finalized a good portion of it.  Only yesterday did it dawn on me that…

Pack Preparation Three - Other Essentials

A few days after I brought home my wonderful new backpack the excitement had worn off and I started to think about how I was actually going to fit in even the minimal amount of clothes that I had picked out for myself.  True the pack said it can hold 60 litres by volume but I failed to take into consideration that it also meant the detachable lid which acts as a sling bag, some…

Pack Preparation Part Two - Your Backpack

**If you're thinking about a backpacking trip or you're in the midst of planning a trip, your backpack is absolutely THE MOST important piece of gear you'll need.  While I can't help you choose the bag that's right for you or your budget, it might be wise to invest something that is comfortable and durable for your own body.  The following is just some BASIC information about bag styles and my experiences.  Go to your…

I am an over achiever when it comes to packing for a trip.  For my last three week trip in March, I went to Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, and Taipei.  Instead of bringing a parka in my carry on, I brought delicious homemade muffins and cookies.  Too bad I can't wear those around my neck while it snows with -5 windchill.  My light Northface jacket, hoodie, track pants, and scarf was all I wore while in…

Film and X-Ray

I know many, perhaps even all, of you don't know that there was a time that people did use something called FILM to take photos.  Nowadays we have it easy.  Digital cameras that weigh next to nothing, even the dSLR cameras are light.  I want a camera that is built like a tank and weighs like one too.  I'll take a Hasselblad over some 12 megapixel dSLR any day of the week.  However, it also…

Dry Suit Diving on the Hottest Day Ever!

I have to say that this has probably been one of the most laid back and leisure dives that I have ever done at Porteau Cove.  The water was still and the vis ok and there was SO much to see.  Well especially knowing the whereabouts of four octopuses!  The drive up to the park was so beautiful with the sun shining and the music blasting.  On top of that the parking gods were smiling…

Welcome!

Welcome to the Where is Ken Today? I will be leaving my beautiful hometown, Vancouver, British Columbia, on August 28th for a whole year!  My first stop will be one of my favourite cities, San Francisco.  I spent almost 7 years there for school and work so it will definitely be nice to visit again.  It is time to catch up with friends, eat burritos, and maybe this time I'll even check out the local…
