After the horrendously long travel day on Monday, I spent most of Tuesday just relaxing and trying to get caught up on my blogging as well as some other work so I didn't really explore Manchester all that much.  I did however go to the shopping centre that is just across the train tracks and it really reminded me of home!  There are stores there like TJ Max (but its called TK Max) and other clothing stores, electronics stores, a bunch of other retail outlets, and a huge grocery store called Sainsbury's.  It must be like the UK's version of Superstore except it is MUCH nicer.  Joe tells me that this is their high end supermarket too.

I wanted to make dinner for Joe since he's kind enough to let me stay with him while I'm visiting and picked up the ingredients and made a brown rice with courgette, red and orange bell pepper, tomatoes casserole, seasoned with parsley, chives, and oregano.  To top it off I used a Grana Padano cheese, it is very similar to Parmigiano Reggiano though.  The dish turn out very delicious and definitely I would make it again.  I still have to go back to the store to try to find the ingredients to make lemon meringue pie.  We'll see how that will work out tomorrow.

Today though, after lunch, Joe and I headed back down towards the Manchester city centre so that way I knew how to walk there and back.  Otherwise I wouldn't have seen anything which would have been a total shame.  We walked to the Town Hall where they were already putting up Christmas decorations!  They really do get into the spirit of things.  I can't wait to be going to the Christmas markets!

Then we walked to where Joe works and parted ways and I had several hours to wander so I just walked around the part of town.  There is a really big shopping area.  One store that I've seen that has basically infiltrated the entire world is H&M.  I have seen them in every country that I've been to so far!

What I like about Manchester (and probably most of Europe too) is that there are a lot of really interesting old architecture mixed in with the new.  Everywhere you walk you see cobblestone streets and old buildings.  Some baroque, some renaissance, others medieval.  Then you have the very modern steel and glass buildings and the contrast between the two sometimes is jarring but other times it works as well.  It will be interesting to see how cities grow in the future.

Later in the evening, I went back to the city centre to meet up with Joe for a quick bite before he goes to the Buddhist Centre for meditation class and I went and did some photography.  I wish I didn't have to leave tomorrow night, but at least there is still one more day to explore a bit and possibly do some more night photography.  After being here for the last few days, it really has reminded me of home though I'm not ready to go back just yet.
